New Jersey resident Angel Illesscas of Philipsburg was arrested on Saturday night, Feb. 17 in connection with a 6-car wreck that happened at the intersection of Caryl Avenue and South Broadway, Yonkers Police announced on Friday, Feb. 23.
According to the department, on the night of the crash, Illesscas drove his gray Honda sedan into several vehicles, damaging five other cars in addition to his own. The collision also caused one of the cars to hit a utility pole, which damaged several electronics including a Yonkers Police camera.
The crash also caused a "significant" traffic delay, police said, adding that one person involved in the wreck suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
While speaking to Illesscas after the wreck, responding officers noticed he was displaying signs of intoxication and administered field sobriety tests, which he failed, the department said.
Illesscas was then arrested and taken to Yonkers City Jail, where a breath test revealed he was almost three times the legal limit, police added. He was charged with aggravated DWI and was then released with an appearance ticket as a result of bail restrictions.
The department later released camera footage of the crash on social media.
"We’re all lucky that someone wasn’t seriously injured during this incident," the department wrote on social media, adding, "This is a stark reminder that drinking and driving do not mix- doing so in Yonkers will land you behind bars."
